With Mill Wheel bringing what can only be described as a crowd big enough to take over a small country, Spinney knew this was going to be a hard game.
The home side started very well, with both teams feeling each other out, but the loss of Nessling very early on forced a substitution, with Whitfield coming on up front, forcing Richardson out wide right.
As the game wore on, Mill Wheel became increasingy frustrated as their attempts at goal were either blocked by the defence or smothered by Cox-Greer in the home goal.
Some good tracking by Asa Green, and strong tackles from the midfield duo of Darby and Scott Green, were illustrative of a very high work rate from the Spinney boys.
The visitors finally broke the deadlock around the 30 minute mark when a break down the left led to a one-on-one save from Cox-Greer, only for a unmarked Mill Wheel player to come in, take a touch then smash it into the empty goal.
Some good work by Richardson and Hasdell down the flanks opened up the visitor's defence but with time after time there was no-one to capitalise on the opportunities.
Further smart footwork from Pete Scott, Darby and Richardson alos almost produced results, and a piledriver from Asa Green went just over the bar, as Spinney finished the half the stronger of the two teams.
A spirited teamtalk at half-time saw the home side do something they had so far failed to do this season - no lapses in concentration as they started the second-half as well as they'd finished the first.
Spinney had two further chances to equalise, with Hasdell hitting the bar, and Darby going one-on-one with the keeper, who did well to stop the midfielder's progress. True to form, Darby was soon back chasing the ball in the centre of the park.
Late call-up Chris Hall, who had thrown in challenge after challenge, unfortunately gave away a free-kick in a last-ditch attempt to stop a shot. The resulting strike saw the wall break apart and an absolute stunning smash fly into the net, despite a hand from Cox-Greer.
More solid defending from the back four kept them the visitors at bay, despite their pushing four up at times, and their frustration was clear to see. Furhter saves and solid defending saw the game end 2-0.
View From Between The Posts, by Jamie Cox-Greer:
Over view - some same old same old. The talking was virtually non-exhistent first half, and Mill Wheel won everything they appealed for. We did much better in the second half. If one of our players calls for the ball,
get out of the way! A few times today we had 2 or 3 players going for the same ball.
We will play a lot worse teams then Mill Wheel this season and, considering they are the league winners-elect, we more then proved a point that we shouldn't be losing games
7-1 or 5-1 when we can produce performances like that. "Salmon" got it right when he claimed we played better today then when we beat Norteles 5-1. I think teams will be shocked with today's result- and Mill Wheel are certainly gutted that they only won 2-0.
See you all at training on Thursday!!!
